To Know Him

As we were wrapping up production of Gentle Whispers, I was reading How Shall We Then Live by Francis Shaeffer.  In the book, Shaeffer analyzes how society has changed over time.  By looking at the art, literature, science, and philosophy produced by man from Ancient Rome to modern day, he explains the evolution that took place in the prominent cultural worldview.  It is a fascinating read that I definitely recommend! 

One particular paragraph really struck me: 
It is not only Christians who can paint with beauty, nor for that matter only Christians who can love or who have creative stirrings.  Even though the image is now contorted, people are made in the image of God.  This is who people are, whether or not they know or acknowledge it.  God is the great Creator, and part of the unique mannishness of man, as made in God's image, is creativity....A person's world view almost always shows through in his creative output, however, and thus the marks on the things he creates will be different.

We are all creative.  And I don't mean the "artsy" or "out-of-the-box thinking" type of creative.  I mean we all possess the ability to create.  Whether it's in business, science, philosophy, law, politics, writing, mathematics, the arts...we have creative outputs.  These outputs reflect what we believe and, collectively, influence society.

Currently, I'm reading The Knowledge of the Holy by A.W. Tozer (another amazing classic!).  His opening sentence states, "What comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us" and he later says, "That our idea of God correspond as nearly as possible to the true being of God is of immense importance to us."

There are so many ways these ideas apply to our lives that I could write about them in separate entries, numerous times, each from a different angle.  But the way God is using the concepts from both of these books together today is to remind me that my life purpose should be to know Him - to know Him rightly, for who He TRULY is - and then allow what I creatively contribute to this world to reflect that which I believe...and Him whom I know.

No matter where you are in life or what your world view, it is my hope that you'll join me in seeking to know God.  It is a sweet journey!
